The rare and endangered Miyabe’s maple, named after the Japanese botanist Kingo Miyabe (1860-1951), is native to Japan.

Wide branches that sweep low to the ground and deeply furrowed, corky bark are among the charms of this densely branched shade tree. Though Miyabe’s maple is listed as endangered in its native habitat in Japan, several cultivars are considered hardy, adaptable urban street trees. The dark green leaves turn golden in fall.

Acer miyabei (Miyabe’s or Miyabe maple; Japanese: クロビイタヤ: kurobiitaya) is a species of maple native to Japan, where it occurs in Hokkaidō and the Tōhoku region in northern Honshū.
Acer miyabei, commonly called Miyabe maple, is a deciduous, small to medium, oval to oval-rounded tree that typically grows to 25-40´ tall. It is native to a few scattered locations near streams and rivers in Hokkaido, Japan where it is now endangered in the wild.
