    This needs to be marked as US slang. Also, from the NY Times examples, I get the impression that this is more often used as a description of the process rather than the actual words you shout. And that it's rather dated. An AE speakers care to clear that up?

    The 19th-century citations look very period, and I'm certainly not familiar with it in the modern day. I'd say good catch and bring on the [obsolete] marking. (-:

    I would say the three cheers are still in figurative use; that is, you say 'Three cheers for CM2DD!' to express warm appreciation, but you do not actually say

    Leader: Hip hip ...
    Crowd: ... hooray!

    three times in AE, though people may still do it in BE? Or is that just on PBS/BBC costume dramas ...
