We've come from here: related discussion: Oh snap! - Oh weh/Oje/Ach herrjeh/Oh nein/Oh Mist!
Thought it would be better to move jinx to its own thread. It would be good to get the exclamation Jinx! into the dictionary as it's pretty common expression in the UK and US (according to the last thread).
Often used by children when they say exactly the same word(s) as another child. The child who says 'jinx' first is the winner, and the one who says it second isn't allowed to speak until the winner says their name. Adults use Jinx! too, but without the game element of trying to say it first.
(Don't think any children or even many adults will associate the exclamation 'Jinx!' with the verb 'to jinx' - it's just something you say when you say the same as someone else. In fact, it wasn't until the other thread that I even noticed the link, and I'm in my 30s! There was a block in my brain between the two meanings of the word jinx: to curse, vs an exclamation that you've said the same as someone else.)
Dulcinea in the other thread suggests that the playground version of Jinx! is called Privat verhext! (or Chips, Cola, Lollipop, verhext, privat!) in Germany. It doesn't sound as though Privat verhext! is as widespread as Jinx!, but I wonder whether we could get an entry into the dictionary with a supplementary description, eg:
Jinx! -- "exclamation/interjection used when two people say the same thing at the same time"
Jinx! (children's game) -- Privat verhext! (Auch: Chips, Cola, Lollipop, verhext, privat!) (children's game played when two children say the same thing at the same time)
Someone will have to propose some German explanations for me. Suggestions and improvements welcome!
