or, shorter:
"a man's word is his bond"

I thought of that, too, but the nice play on words - Wort/Wörter - is missing.

BTW: Is "A man's as good as his word" really the same as "Ein Mann, ein Wort"? The German phrase basically means "Was gesagt ist, das gilt!", whereas I feel (nothing more), that the English phrase contains a hidden "always only", meaning that you have to judge a man (or woman) by whether he/she keeps his/her promises.

Am I wrong?

I don't know any proverb that you may have in mind,but 'one man, one vote' was the slogan with which the Northern Ireland Civil Rights Movment proclaimed to the world that Protestants had more than one vote whereas Catholics had none or at best just one.

Not quite, schildkroete;-) "Ein Mann, ein Wort" basically says, my word stands, I won't renege on it. Nothing to do with voting, I'm afraid, although it does sound similar ...
