Halbsatz ist zum Teil im übertragenen Sinne, ähnlich wie ein paar Worte, aber etwas substanzieller, also es wird der Inhalt tatsächlich verändert dadurch.
Im Prinzip ist es in meinem vorliegenden Beispiel (s.o.) wirklich mehr oder weniger ein halber Satz, der der Geschichte hinzugefügt wird.

Vorab möchte ich gleich mal sagen, dass der Satz mMn. höcht ungeschickt ist. Ist es eine Überstzung oder ein Orignalsatz?

The Halbsatz you're inquiring about is, in fact a clause, so someone added a clause here. But I wouldn't use "services" in connection with tenderness and affection if you're not trying to imply that Smith was a peophile.d

Das ist ein Originalzitat, allerdings schon aus dem 18. Jahrhundert. Linguistisch gesehen ist es doch gar keine clause, sondern nur eine Nominalphrase, oder? (fehlendes Verb) Zudem hört sich clause so sehr linguistisch an, aber Halbsatz in meinem Sinne ist ja eher übertragen/umgangssprachlich.
