    What makes a good friend?

    Correct?

Was gibt ein guter Freund ab????????????

Looked this up in a dictionary and it said 'abgeben'. I've never heard this expression before and it sounds really strange.

Is it the most usual way of asking this question?

I want my students to answer 'ein guter Freund sollte ehrlich, sympathisch usw sein'. Is this the right question??

And is 'sollte' correct here? Not 'soll'? - it is from their own point of view.

Was macht einen guten Freund aus?

Yes, "sollte" is correct and if they answer "Ein Freund sollte..." they refer to their own opinion.

    A good friend soll ... = a good friend shall ...

This sounds more like a command: "Thou shalt not steal!"

    A good friend sollte ... = a good friend should ...

This is the right way to say it if it's not meant to be a command.

Mit 'abgeben' hieße es: Wer gibt einen guten Freund ab? Jemand, der ehrlich, sympathisch etc. ist.

Abgeben könnte in dem folgenden Sinne benutzt werde:

"Sie würde eine gute Freundin abgeben" - "She would make a good friend".
