How do you do? Brit. - Guten Tag!

    Correction

    How do you do?

    -

    Wie geht's dir?

    Comment
Das finde ich völlig schwachsinnig "How do you do?" als Frage (!) mit Guten Tag! zu übersetzen.. :O

No, 'wie geht es dir' is wrong. 'How do you do?' is not the same as 'How are you?'; it's a Floskel used in introductions.

A: May I introduce you to Mr. B?
B: How do you do? I've heard so much about you.
C: How do you do? It's a pleasure to meet you.

See the archive (Suche in allen Foren) for more examples.

I find that really weird.. I mean I have relatives in London and I asked them and even my oncle didn't confirm that it's used..

Good Lord, what's the matter with you ?!

"How do you do ?" I S a way of addressing sb in a more formal way during a FIRST TIME INTRODUCTION(there are signs that it is becoming obsolete).
The phrase "How do you do ?" has a "?" attached, yet it is NO question and no answer
    such as " bad" , " I've got a headache " etc. is expected !
A translation " Guten Tag " is thus not too far off the mark, 'though it can't be called 'precise' either. "Translations" of IDIOMATIC set phrases such as "how do you do"
should not be attempted anyway, an approximate CONVERSION is all you get.

Was Lennart "total schwachsinnig" findet ist ja eigentlich zunächst irrelevant.

"How do you do?" ist eine Begrüßungsfloskel, die korrekterweise auch immer einfach mit "How do you do?" erwidert wird.

Thus it is not dissimilar to "Guten Tag", and quite definitely not "Wie geht's(sic) dir?".

Where "How do you do?" does differ slightly from "Guten Tag" is that it is generally only used when meeting someone for the first time.

The current entry is OK, though it might be worth adding something to show you only use it once, when first introduced.

    Proposed correction not supported.

I also think it would be good to add something to the effect that "how do you do?" is used only on first being introduced to someone. Perhaps it should be marked "form." as well.

BTW, does anyone still use "Freut mich" in German on being introduced to someone, or am I totally out of date?

No, you're not, Anne, it is still common and often used, yet I consider it to sound a little bit ironic. "Angenehm" is my choice. But I think everyone has it's own point of view.

    @franz

"How did you do" ist eher die Frage nach einem Resultat (in etwa, "Na, was hast Du für eine Note bekommen?")- "How do you think you did" wäre dann "Wie ist es gelaufen".

Allerdings hat beides nichts mit der formellen Begrüßung "How do you do" zu tun.
