  1. Using LEO with or without a personal account

    Using certain parts of our website requires a personal account.

    • Dictionaries: To use the dictionaries you do not need a login.
    • Forums: All threads in the forums are open for viewing, to actively participate in the discussions, an account is required.
    • Vocabulary trainer: LEO offers a small selection of trial wordlists and exercises for non-registered users. To make full use of everything the vocabulary trainer has to offer (cf. the figures on the left), an account is required.
    • Courses: Purchasing and using our language courses requires an account. Trial versions are available free of charge and open to non-registered users.
    Details of how to register can be found on the following pages. Registration is free of charge, as is the use of all of our products.

  2. Login

    Components of an account

    You need to go through a registration process to set up a personal account with LEO. An account requires the following data:

    • Login/user name: This is the name by which we can identify you when you want to log in.
    • Password: This is a secret combination of letters and/or numbers which together with your login allows you access to your private area.
    • Nick/alias: This is your pseudonym which appears under your contributions in the forums. Nicks are unique and allow full anonymity while still giving you a recognisable ‘face’.
    The registration page can be accessed by opening the ‘Login’ menu at the top of the screen (see fig. 3). The registration process is explained step by step on the next page.

  3. Registrierung


    Im ersten Abschnitt der Registrierung geht es um Ihre Zugangsdaten - achten Sie daher besonders auf die eingegebenen Daten, da nur mit korrekten Daten eine Anmeldung möglich ist.

    • Benutzername (Login): Mit dem Benutzernamen und Ihrem Passwort können Sie sich nach der Registrierung bei LEO anmelden um die persönlichen Dienste zu nutzen.Weitere Informationen

      • For security reasons, your username is not visible to others.
      • Your username needs to be between 5 and 32 characters long and may contain letters (excluding umlauts), numbers (0-9) and hyphens.
      • Usernames are unique. If someone else has already registered with your username, LEO will offer you a list of alternatives to choose from.
    • Passwort: Wählen Sie ein nicht zu einfach zu erratendes Passwort. Es gibt bei LEO keine Vorgaben für das Passwort, Sie können es beliebig wählen.
    • E-Mail Adresse: Sie erhalten nach der Registrierung eine E-Mail an diese angegebene Adresse. In dieser E-Mail finden Sie einen Link, mit dem Sie Ihre E-Mail Adresse und die Registrierung bestätigen müssen. Ohne die Bestätigung können Sie sich nicht bei LEO anmelden.
    Im zweiten Abschnitt geht es insbesondere um die Forenfunktionalität:
    • Nick (Alias): Den Nick sollten Sie so wählen, dass er keinen Rückschluss auf Ihren Namen oder Benutzernamen ermöglicht, da er als Pseudonym unter Ihren Forumsbeiträgen auftritt (wenn Sie welche verfassen).Weitere Informationen

      • You do not need your nick to log in to your LEO account.
      • Your nick is how others will identify you in your forum posts.

      Get in touch with other users
      Tick the box to exchange messages with other LEO users via LEO's private message system (no email address required).

  4. Login
    My account 

    How to sign in and change your personal data

    1. Open the login menu at the top of the screen and type in your login and password. If you have entered the correct data, the link will change to My LEO.
    2. If you do not want to have to type in your data again next time you sign in, tick the box next to ‘Save data for auto login’.
    3. Click "Lost password" if you forgot your login and/or your password and LEO will send your login data to the e-mail address specified in your profile.

    In the ‘My LEO’ menu you can

    • change your language profile or address. If you need to change your login or nick (for a valid reason), please send us an e-mail;
    • change your  password;
    • sign out by clicking ‘Logout’.
    Once you are logged in, you can start your own discussions or post follow-ups in the forums and use the vocabulary trainer (for details read the separate user guides).

    If you no longer require your account, please send us an e-mail requesting deletion. Please indicate the e-mail address from which you registered and our login or nick for verification.
