Information on the order of search results

Basic overview  ­

Search results are categorised into parts of speech (see below). If a category contains no results it is not displayed.

Entries fall into the following groups:

• Nouns: e.g. house
• Verbs: e.g. to go
• Adjektives and adverbs: e.g. beautiful
• Prepositions: e.g. about
• Definitions: e.g. Blairism - Politik und Ansichten Tony Blairs
• Abbreviations: e.g. abbr.
• Phrases and expressions: e.g. a chip off the old block
• Examples: e.g. May I go?

Within the individual categories, the likely "most relevant" entries appear at the top of each section - however, they may not always be the most relevant to you. The method used to determine the relevance of an entry is quite complex and explaining the exact sort criteria would be going in to too much detail.

Apart from actual translation results, other options are offered:

• Possible base forms: If you look up an inflected word (e.g. gegangen), results will also include matches for the base form where available (in this case for gehen). Clicking the link to the base form at the top of the table will start a search for the uninflected form.

• Orthographically similar words and Did you mean ...?: da sich immer mal wieder Tippfehler in eine Anfrage einschleichen können, finden Sie in dieser Sektion Wörter, deren Schreibweise dem Suchbegriff ähnlich ist. Sollten Sie kein Ergebnis erhalten, steht diese Sektion unter der Überschrift Did you mean ... ganz oben.

Kategorienansicht

The results page contains:

• The name of the individual sections (in this example: ‘Substantive’ (nouns)).
• The translation pairs – in this case English on the left  ­englischenand German on the right.
• Eventuell weitere Ergebnisse der gleichen Kategorie. Es wird zunächst nur eine Auswahl der Ergebnisse angezeigt, um die Ergebnisliste nicht zu lang werden zu lassen. Klicken Sie auf die letzte Zeile (im Beispiel 49 weitere Substantive), so werden Ihnen diese Ergebnisse angezeigt. Alternativ können Sie auch auf die Kategorienüberschrift klicken. Ein erneuter Klick blendet die weiteren Ergebnisse wieder aus.

Word pairs and related information

When you look at an entry in one of our dictionaries, you will see several icons which you can click to call up additional information, listen to audio files or save the entry in your vocab collection. Here's a list of the icons and what they do (certain icons may not be available depending on the entry):

•  Click this icon to save the entry in your personal vocab collection (for use in vocabulary building activities).
•  Click this icon to access links to other resources including monolingual dictionaries, thesauri and conjugation tables.
•  This icon opens a conjugation and/or declension table for the entry on the left and/or the right. Click this icon if you want to find out the past tense of the 2nd person singular of a verb (e.g. gehen: du gingst) or the plural of a noun (e.g. Haus: die Häuser).
•  Click the Play button to listen to the pronunciation of a word. In many cases we provide audio files that were recorded by native speakers. Where this is not the case you may want to click the ­ button (additional information); a computer-generated audio file may be available.
