    German Restaurants in Berlin

    Comment

    Hello Berliners (and Berlin-Kenner)

I'm posting for a friend of mine who will be visiting Berlin in mid-January. This friend enjoys a very wide range of food, from food trucks to gourmet restaurants, of all nationalities. He said he searched on line for restaurants in Berlin, looking for authentic German food, but found only postings of foreign food, from Italian to Vietnamese, but little or nothing that's true German.

I mentioned Leo to him, and he asked me to post the question for him: can anyone suggest restaurants (whether Feinkost or Bierstube) in Berlin with authentic German food?

Meine Empfehlung: der Alt-Berliner Biersalon am Kudamm

    http://www.alt-berliner-biersalon.de/

Which brings us naturally to the question of where do you get the best currywurst in Berlin. Just as with "the meaning of life", this question has been subject to much debate over the decades and is probably unanswerable, but I have heard the real answer is "Kannopkes".

    Or look here:

Wasn't there a thread not that long ago, possibly nominally on some totally other topic, where people shared recommendations for Currywurst in Berlin? wupper might even have contributed (and could skim back through his threads)?

Not that I would actually recommend that particular 'food' myself, no matter where. But if someone is bound and determined to eat much too much ketchup ...

If you care to get out of the West to venture into the East, Lemke's Brauhaus Mitte, right near S-Alexanderplatz is enjoyable. It looks big, and there are often groups there, but my German husband and a couple of German friends have enjoyed the food there, and large groups are often placed separately from smaller parties. Another plus is that Lemke is one of the original craft brewers in Berlin (going back to 1988). While the beers aren't usually terribly daring (in the way that many of today's newer craft brewers—even Germans—are becoming), they have a nice variety of well-crafted beers.

    RE #25, 26

As my 94-year-old uncle from New York (Brooklyn) once said about his home town: "It's a great place to live, but I wouldn't want to visit," turning the familiar phrase on its head. That applies equally to Berlin in my opinion.

@27: Which explains while you stayed in Berlin instead of just visiting ;o)

I enjoyed my visit earlier this year very much (although it was obviously much too short), including meeting some LEOs, and hope to return in the near future, but I'm not quite sure I'd want to live there (although I'd like to steal some of your bookshops...)

Oh, and the only Currywurst I tried was Konnopke.

    1) True. But I was also a visitor (often in fact) at one time.

    2a) Same here. :-)

2b) It's too bad that Kiepert (at Ernst-Reuter-Platz) was sold out, a victim of Hugendubel. I used to spend entire afternoons there in my student days. And the staff was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful. Another tradition lost.

    3) Don't keep us in suspense, Dragon. I haven't tried it yet.

And a little more on topic: from the list linked to in #3, Max & Moritz near Moritzplatz is a Kreuzberg classic. The place is a little bit like walking into a time machine. There is a larger meeting room in the back with a concert grand piano and another meeting room upstairs. Often the site of left-leaning groups and artists of all types, (American) Democrats Abroad used to meet there once a month (Stammtisch). I don't know whether they still do.

    @30:

    2a) :-)

2b) Well, the English second-hand bookshop (I think its name was St.George's) was absolutely brilliant (and very dangerous; I stopped at five books but only because I was starting to get worried that I might not be able to transport everything home), I also loved Otherland (SciFi/Fantasy) and Hammett (I think?) (Crime), and the Autorenbuchhandlung Savignyplatz, and Kulturkaufhaus Dussmann, and where else was I? I think I bought about 15 books in total (and I'd have bought more If I'd been sure that they'd fit in my suitcase). On second thoughts, I'd better not steal your bookshops...

If your friend is thinking of exploring further afield than the inner city, e.g. a day trip to SW Berlin/Potsdam (Glienicker Park, Potsdam, Sanssouci), I can recommend Zehlendorfer Hof, Wirtshaus an der Rehwiese, and Haus Sanssouci (haven't eaten here in a while, but the view over the Wannsee is lovely).

More central (Kreuzberg) is das Alte Zollhaus.

I'm sure that that's of similar quality to the other two. The one near Hackescher Markt was quite full the couple of times when I was there, which isn't such an issue at the big on at Alex.

Re corn dogs: My husband loves them! We even planned a trip down Route 66 (what's left of it, that is) to include a classic old diner/cafe on the outskirts of Springfield, IL, that has specialized in them for ages.

I've seen a place in Berlin that has them, but, since it was pouring and the one person in the food truck/trailer was busy with a large phone-in order and wouldn't serve us, we didn't order any and went on.

There's a small outdoor market on Greifswalder Str., a block or two outside of the Ringbahn, a bit past the EDEKA. The market is in front of a long high-rise block of offices and apartments. The trailer, closer to the street than the rest of the market, had a variety of types of fast food, but corn dogs were one of them. I think you could choose what type of sausage went into it. I only get there every couple of years, so I'm not sure that it's there.

My husband can't figure out why they are available more often here, such as at street festivals.

I haven't been for a while but would go back to see if the rumours are true).
