Rash sounds very native in this context and the sentence is perfectly constructed.

The connotations of the two words, however, are different and possibly significant in light of the subject. (Flut/Sintflut/Urkraft vs. rash/hasty/temporary superficial irritation). One of the images that comes with Flut is that of a dam breaking, which would correspond to the view that there is large backlog of cases for which 'the dam has burst' and there will therefore be more revelations to come. A rash is inherently less cataclysmic and more suggestive of an intense but short-lived flurry of unexplained or random activity.

I though the original was in German and contained the word 'Flut', in which case the question is how to render that in English. So my point was simply that rash is a bit weak for Flut. But perhaps I misunderstood the question.
