    There are probably at least half a dozen possible German translations; I'm just starting with these in order to get the discussion off the ground.

    The bilingual dictionaries mark this BE, but if that was ever true, I don't think it is now.

    The word that brought this to my mind was actually 'befremdlich'; I'm still not sure if that's another possible translation, or if it's more just in the direction of 'strange,' without any negative tinge.

    That is, I have the tentative impression that

    off-putting : repellent :: befremdlich : abstoßend

    (= A is to B as C is to D)

    I.e., that both 'off-putting' and 'befremdlich' are somewhat negative, but less strongly so. But I would appreciate it if anyone else could help confirm or refute that guess.

    This discussion: related discussion: off-putting
    suggests disconcerting as a synonym:
    Dictionary: disconcerting

    which would be irritierend rather than abschreckend

    If you take "off-putting" to mean "putting you off your food", as suggested in the liked discussion, then you could go as far as to call it ekelerregend which would correspond to repellent

    Ich unterstuetze alle Vorschlaege, inklusive #3 abschreckend, habe aber Bedenken bei "abtoernend".

    "Ekelerregend" faende ich bei weitem zu stark fuer das doch recht milde "off-putting".

    Waehrend "abtoernend" von der Bedeutung stimmt, passt es in der Sprachebene nicht so ganz. Gibt es nicht einen besseren englischen Begriff, der den Eindruck von "Jugendsprache" erweckt? Falls nicht, dann stimme ich der Aufnahme zu, damit zumindest eine Uebersetzung fuer das deutsche Wort in LEO ist.
