yes, i see how indem is used.. i only wonder if it can be replaced by wenn.

in my opinion you can't replace it by "wenn" although the two are very close and the difference is difficult to explain.

You can replace "indem" by "dadurch, dass ich/du/.../"

And although one could in most cases replace "wenn" by "dadurch, dass ich/.../", too, I feel that "wenn" also has a connotation of "sobald".

To me "indem" sounds more like a general rule, like explaining to someone how to do something, whereas "wenn" sort of emphasizes the "cause and effect" aspect of whatever is explained a little more.

That said, in colloquial use "wenn" is frequently used for general rules/explaining, maybe because "indem" sounds just a little more formal than "wenn".

I don't know if you understand what I mean, this probably sounds quite confusing - it's just my personal perception of the difference between "indem" and "wenn".

I'd love to hear (read) how other German native speakers feel about this - or maybe (probably!) there is even someone out there who has the perfect rule...?
