    irgendwas

first person: so you're coming tonight, right?

second person: well, i actually have this other thing to go to . . .

    first person: (interrupting) whatever!!

would 'irgendwas' make any sense at all as a translation of the exclamation "what-ever!"
and I don't mean whatever, as in yeah, yeah, whatever . . . (with a bored, apathetic tone)

it's more of a joking or a frustrated whatever.

or perhaps this use of whatever will be forever untranslateable ( too culturally specific . . . . ?)

    but irgendwas sounds pretty funny

Hier würde "Egal!" oder "Erzähl' nix!" oder so etwas passen, also im Sinne:"Deine Ausrede interessiert mich nicht".

It does sound funny but you don't really use "Irgendwas" in this context, I would probably say:
"(Na) was auch immer!" which can be bored, frustrated of joking depending on the way you say it :-)

    whatever!

    -

wie auch immer!; wie du meinst...

I think "wie auch immer" would be best for the joking/frustrated kind of "whatever" (although you might perhaps like to explain this to us more specifically), whereas "wie du meinst" would be more likely the bored/apathetic kind. But it also depends on your tone of voice...
